The Second Coming of Our Lord
Chancel
The Second Coming of Our Lord window was installed in celebration of Redeemer's 100th anniversary. The following is the window's interpretation by Artist/Designer Adam Smith of Pittsburgh Stained Glass Studios in Pittsburgh, PA.
The theme of the window is taken from the revelation of St. John the Divine. The final book in the New Testament, tells us of the second coming, or return of Our Lord and Savior to Earth. This account, or "revelation", contains within it multifaceted symbolic meanings, and the new stained glass window is a graphic representation of those major themes.
The central or main figure is of Our Lord, robed in brilliant ruby glass, symbolic of His deep and everlasting love. He comes upon a descending coud-surrounded throne with trumpet carrying angels. (Rev. 1-7 "Behold he cometh with clouds..."). Directly beneath the feet of Our Lord is the Lamb of God, resting upon the "Word" or the Book of God. The Lamb, (ofent used as a symbol of Our Lord), holds the white banner with a red cross upon it often referred to as the triumphant banner or victory banner signifying Our Lord's victory over death, resurrection, and eternal life. Seven seals are contained within the pages of the book, which only the Lamb may break open. The first four seals release the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, while breaking the seventh and final seal cues the Angelic Trumpeters to sound their horns (Rev. 5-6). Behind the Lamb there appears a partial image of an Earthly globe, swirled in clouds and having an atmosphere, and is symbolic of God's almightly power and dominion over Earth. The seven surrounding Angelic Trumpeters are described in chapters 8-11 of Revelation. They sound or blow their trumpets to unleash each of the apocalyptic events. However, in this design, they purposefully are portrayed as "heralds", and have been specifically appointed to fanfare the arrival of the Lord in all His majesty. At the very top of the design the Alpha and Omega symbols are included signifying "I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end" Rev. 22:13.
